Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement
Welcome to Math 8H! This is a math class for 8th grade students who have performed well in math in the past.
In Math 8H, students will solve multi-step equations and inequalities in one variable, analyze and graph linear equations and bivariate data, solve systems of linear equations graphically, learn about functions, identify angle relationships in parallel lines cut by a transversal, use angle relationships in triangle, distinguish between rational and irrational numbers, use the Pythagorean Theorem, and calculate volumes of cylinders, spheres, and cones.
In this class we will focus on ten I Can statements which students will need to master.
- I can state the number of solutions and solve multi step equations including absolute value. (Mod 7 and supplemental (8.EE.7, 8.EE.7b 8.EE.7a)
- I can solve and graph multi-step inequalities including no solution and infinitely many solutions. (Supp. Materials)
- I can graph proportional relationships, interpret slope, and compare proportional relationships represented in different ways. (8.EE.5)
- I can interpret, represent, and compare nonproportional linear relationships including scatter plots. (Mod 3, 4, 5, 14) (8.F.3, 8.F.4 8.F.2 8.EE.5 8.SP.1 8.SP.3)
- I can analyze and solve systems of linear equations graphically. (Mod 8) (8.EE.8a 8.EE.8b)
- I can identify, interpret, and compare functions represented in a variety of ways. (Mod 6) (8.F.1 8.F.3 8.F2 8.F.5)
- I can simplify problems with exponents/radicals and identify rational and irrational numbers. (Mod 1, 2, supplemental material for depth) (8.NS.1 8.NS.2 8.EE.1 8.EE.3 8.EE.4)
- I can identify angle relationships made with parallel lines and a transversal and apply triangle angle properties. (Mod 11) (8.G.5)
- I can apply the Pythagorean theorem to solve problems in 2D and 3D and to find distance. (Mod 12)(8.G.7 8.G.6 8.G.8)
- I can solve problems involving volumes of cylinders, cones and spheres. (Mod 13) (8.G.9)
Assessment of Progress
There will be 10 I Can tests (see previous section for I Cans) which students are required to pass with a minimum score of 70%. During term four, we anticipate three additional tests as listed.
Term 1: I Can #1, #2, #3
Term 2: I Can #4, #5, #6
Term 3: I Can #7, #8, #9, #10
Term 4: Transformations, two-way tables, scientific notation
If students do not pass an I Can Test, they are required to re-do the appropriate study guide and make an appointment to re-take the test. Students who are not satisfied with their score on a test may improve their grade by following the same procedure.
Some materials are provided, and a fee will be charged if these items are lost or damaged:
- Go Math book
- Dixon planner
- A plastic pronged pocket folder
- A calculator for use in math
Materials I ask that students bring (contact me if this is not possible for your family):
- 2 pencils
- an extra eraser
- filler/looseleaf paper to put in the folders
- 2 dry erase markers, not yellow – preferably thin
Note: erasers and whiteboards are provided for class use. Only markers are needed.
If you are able to donate supplies to our classroom, we appreciate donations of:
- A box of tissues
- Extra dry erase markers
We have a classroom set of TI-30XS Multiview scientific calculators. If students would like to be able to use the same calculator at home, you can usually find them at any office supply store, online, or big box stores like Walmart and Target for around $15-20.
- Be Respectful: treat teacher, students, self, and property with respect.
- Be responsible: be on time, have materials, and be engaged in class.
- Be compassionate: listen to others, be kind, apologize, allow for mistakes.
- Be safe: follow rules and procedures, be careful in actions, do not bully.
Frequently Needed Procedures
- Entering the room
a. Get a drink and go to the bathroom before class
b. Come in the room with time to spare
c. Gather supplies, be in your seat before the bell rings
d. Start bell work
- Going to the bathroom/getting a drink
a. If possible, go at start of a passing time
b. If you must go in class, ask to go after instruction
c. If given permission, fill out your planner
d. Return within 5 minutes (bathroom), or 2 minutes (drink)
e. You only get three hall passes per term
a. Based on correct answers, mark your answers right/wrong
b. Give yourself a score based on what your work shows
c. 4: Expert, 3: Practitioner, 2: Apprentice, 1: Novice
d. Put your circled score at the top of the last page of the assignment
- Making up missed work
a. Find out what the missed work is (check Powerschool or the assignment board, ask your teacher, or ask a friend)
b. Complete the assignment during iTime or at home
c. Ask the teacher for the key to the assignment before class starts
d. Grade your own work out of 4 as usual
e. When we line up for scores, or at the end of class, show the teacher your scored assignment
- Making up I CANS
a. Complete the study guide for the missed learning targets
b. Set up a time to come in after school or during iTime to make up the I CAN (you only need to make up learning targets you didn’t pass)
c. Come in at appointed time and remind the teacher which I Can you are here to do
d. Or, come to the relevant after school I CAN class

Progress Reports and Report Cards
Ms. Ambler’s classes utilize standards based grading. We use the 4 levels of mastery as follows:
4: Advanced/expert (passing)
3: Proficient/practitioner (passing)
2: Emerging/apprentice (not passing)
1: Beginning/novice (not passing)
Students are required to re-do learning targets on I CANS that are not passing.
There are two categories listed in the gradebook: practice and evidence. Practice is sometimes recorded but does not affect the grade, since students are still learning concepts at that point. Evidence (I CANS, quizzes) is collected after a student has been taught all relevant material and forms the basis of their grades.
Any practice or evidence that has not been turn in will be marked “missing,” and if there is insufficient evidence the grade will be changed to “I” until enough evidence is produced. Typically this means the student needs to make up an I CAN test.
Sometimes, a student has only partially completed an I CAN test. This will be marked as “incomplete” so you know the student needs to finish this in order for me to mark evidence on their mastery accurately.
Report cards are sent home with students at the end of each term
Report cards include a letter grade and a citizenship grade

Dixon Middle School is not fully transitioned to standards based grading, and our reporting system (Powerschool) requires a letter grade to be assigned to each student. To assign letter grades, I check the most recent piece of evidence for each I CAN, average out the scores, and use the following scale to assign a letter grade:
