Percussion Parent Letter

Dear Percussion Parents

I am excited to have your student in Percussion class this year!

Here are just a few pieces of information that should answer some questions that often come up at the beginning of the year.

Students do NOT need to bring their instruments on the first day of school.  They will need to bring them on Wednesday, August 21th.  Students will be assigned a locker in which they can store their percussion kit during the day.  They will need to be taken home each day after school to practice.

Your student will need a percussion kit.  This consists of a set of bells (keyboard), practice pad, bell mallets, and snare drum sticks.  Percussion kits are available at any of our local music stores.  We will also have representatives from our preferred store, Bert Murdock Music, at Back to School Night on Monday.  They can assist you with renting or purchasing a percussion kit.

We do have a LIMITED number of percussion kits available to rent from the school. These should be used only as a last resort if you absolutely cannot get a percussion kit from the music store.  The cost to rent a percussion kit is $40. Students will need to fill out a rental form, have it signed by a parent, and have it signed by the office (for verification of fee payment).  Rental forms will need to be turned in Tuesday or before school on Wednesday to assure that I have time to get a kit out and ready for them to play in class.

The book we are using this year is Essential Elements for Band Book 1.  Students are not required to purchase a book.  We will let them check out a book from the school at no cost. However, many students prefer to purchase their own book so they can write in them.  We will do a book order during the first week for any students who wish to purchase a book.  The cost is $18.

Students who are continuing on to play percussion in the band will need to be registered for Panther Band during 2nd semester. If your student is not already registered for Panther Band, our counseling office will be happy to assist you in getting that added to their schedule.  It is difficult to change schedules later in the year to accommodate this, so I recommend that it be done in the Fall.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about the first few days of class.
