Dan Smith of the Provo Police Department, the Resource Officer here at Dixon, was recently awarded the 2015 National School Safety Award in Las Vegas, Nevada. The award recognizes those organizations and individuals who have created safe learning environments for our nation’s youth. Smith was the only individual officer recognized this year; the other awards went to organizations and school districts.
Since his arrival, crime at school has plummeted, and serious fights now rarely happen. Mr. Sites and Officer Smith have worked closely together for four years with the mutual goal of creating a safe, engaging environment at our school. They communicate frequently to meet every student’s diverse needs when it comes to discipline and consequence, realizing that suspension is not always the correct solution a problem. Both Officer Smith and Mr. Sites have an open door policy, and are always eager to lend a listening ear to any troubles or conflicts a student is having.
We are proud of our Resource Officer, and love having him here at Dixon! You can read the whole article posted by the American Shooting Journal here.
