Dixon Middle School

Dixon’s very own Band Teacher Christy Giblon was honored by the Utah State Legislature.

National Board Certification (NBC) is a voluntary, advanced teaching credential that goes beyond state licensure. NBC has national standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certifies teachers who successfully complete its rigorous certification process.

According to the NBPTC website, “a landmark report in 1983 titled A Nation at Risk detailed a “rising tide of mediocrity” in education that threatened America’s future.

In response, the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy convened a task force of policymakers, educators, teachers associations and business leaders.

In A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century, the task force called for strengthening standards in teaching and professionalizing the teaching workforce.

In 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was born.

When asked why she elected to become National Board Certified, Ms. Giblon responded she was seeking ways to engage with students in our community that do not come from a classical music background or have zero exposure to that kind of music in their homes.  When asking herself how to improve her instruction, she sought to become certified to learn as much as she could about her subject and craft with the aim to have as many resources, tools, and techniques to help Dixon students.  Her passion for music instruction has created an incredible band program many students enjoy while at Dixon but also desire to continue moving on to Provo High.  We believe that Ms. Giblon goes above and beyond with her classes each day and now possesses the national certification and recognition to prove it. Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work!
